Here is the thing with me and Naruto. I go through these weird, irregular phases of hate/love in regards to this comic (perhaps directly correlated with how much Sasuke is featured at any one time, perhaps not), but whenever I reenter times wherein I enjoy it, I enjoy it A LOT. Everything that has been happening recently in the comic really reminds me just how epic the series is, because of how all the separate events are slowly converging into one amazing blowout, because of the layers and layers of backstory that are not just there as filler but are lineages which affect present day people and situations, and because of Naruto himself, who is probably one of the best and most inspirational fictional characters a young teenager (as I was when I first got into Naruto) can have.
Stories like Naruto, where the author has crafted such well-developed main characters and such a far-reaching history for everything that leads up to their existence, are what suck me into the fictional world far deeper than any of the “magic” that defines them. I love how Kishimoto has made the past repeat itself not once, but twice (perhaps even three times?), and events are now coming full circle. I love how interconnected the characters are — whether a good or bad relationship, old or new, these relationships count, have impact, affect. And I really love how the themes in the comic start off with something as simple as “I want to be recognized,” and, as more and more of the plot develops, gradually grows and becomes more mature along with the characters, until now they’ve reached a point of “I want to protect my loved ones and change the world for the better, and I won’t stop until everyone recognizes and believes in my goal,” and yet still, at the heart of it all, still replays a simple message of “don’t give up on your dreams.”
I guess I’m just saying that I love stories that are thought out in such depth. It makes the reading such a worthwhile experience.
TL;DR: Naruto is fun.
